The Residence Pass-Talent, explained properly
Ten years, not tied to any employer, and your spouse can work. No deposit, no property. You need three consecutive years on an Employment Pass and around RM 15,000 a month. For anyone already working here, this is probably the best long-term route available.
What you need
- Three consecutive years working in Malaysia on an Employment Pass.
- Basic salary of around RM 15,000 a month — roughly RM 180,000 a year.
- A degree or professional qualification.
- At least two years of Malaysian tax filings.
Why it's the quiet winner
| Residence Pass | MM2H Silver | Premium Visa | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Money down | None | ~USD 283,000 | ~USD 267,000 |
| Must buy a home? | No | RM 600,000 | No |
| Term | 10 years | 5 years | 20 years |
| Can you work? | Yes, any employer | No | Yes |
| Spouse can work? | Yes | No | Dependant terms |
No capital tied up at all. If you've been working in Malaysia for three years and earn over RM 15,000 a month, you can get a ten-year employer-independent pass for administrative fees — against roughly USD 283,000 for MM2H Silver.
The catch
You have to already be here on an Employment Pass, which means someone has to have hired you first. It's not a route you can start from outside Malaysia. For people arriving with capital rather than a job offer, the MM2H tiers or Premium Visa remain the options.
Your family
Spouse gets a dependant pass and — unusually — can work. Children under 18 are covered. Parents can generally be included on a long-term social visit pass.
Common questions
What are the Residence Pass-Talent requirements?
Three consecutive years working in Malaysia on an Employment Pass, a basic salary of around RM 15,000 a month, a degree or recognised professional qualification, and at least two years of Malaysian tax filings. It grants a ten-year pass that is not tied to any employer.
Can my spouse work on a Residence Pass-Talent?
Yes. This is one of the pass's more unusual advantages — the spouse of an RP-T holder can work in Malaysia, which is not the case on MM2H or most dependant passes.
Is the Residence Pass better than MM2H?
For anyone already working in Malaysia, almost certainly. It gives a ten-year employer-independent pass with work rights and no capital requirement at all, against roughly USD 283,000 tied up for MM2H Silver. The limitation is that you must already hold an Employment Pass, so it is not available to someone arriving with capital rather than a job.
