The Employment Pass, explained properly
If a Malaysian company wants to hire you, the Employment Pass is the route — not MM2H. Your employer applies, not you. It comes in three categories set mainly by salary, and it ties you to that employer.
The three categories

What it means in practice
- Your employer applies, usually through MYXpats or the relevant regulator. You cannot apply on your own behalf.
- It's tied to that job. Change employer and the pass has to be re-applied for.
- Category I and II holders can normally bring a spouse and children on dependant passes.
- It counts towards the Residence Pass. Three consecutive years on an Employment Pass is the main qualifying route to the ten-year Residence Pass-Talent, which is not tied to any employer.
How it compares to the long-stay visas
Completely different purpose. MM2H and the Premium Visa are about living here on your own money; the Employment Pass is about someone paying you to be here. If you have a job offer, this is almost always the right route and considerably cheaper than any MM2H tier.
Where it gets interesting is what comes after. Employment Pass → Residence Pass-Talent gives you a ten-year, employer-independent pass without tying up capital or buying property, which is the closest thing Malaysia has to a merit-based long-term route.
Tax
Employment income earned in Malaysia is Malaysian-source and taxable regardless of how many days you're here. That is different from the long-stay visas, where foreign income is generally outside the net. How Malaysian tax works.

Can I apply for a Malaysian Employment Pass myself?

Can I bring my family on an Employment Pass?
